Christie’s Auction to Unveil Previously Unauctioned Works by Bonnard and Matisse

16.03.2026

Two Paris auctions in April will offer more than 120 works that have never before appeared on the market. They present a rare opportunity to acquire works by Pierre Bonnard and Henri Matisse, prominent figures in the Paris art scene in the early decades of the 20th century.

The collection of paintings, gouaches, drawings, illustration projects, and lithographs by Pierre Bonnard comes from the collection of Claude Terrasse, the artist’s grandnephew and only godson. The expected highlights of the auction include the sale of the paintings “Midi au jardin” (pre-auction estimate €400,000–600,000) and “La Rue” (€250,000–350,000). The sale also includes a preparatory gouache for Bonnard’s masterpiece “Nu à la baignoire,” exhibited at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The collection will be auctioned on April 14th in Paris as part of an evening auction.

A wide range of Matisse’s prints and works on paper will be available online, covering a rich variety of motifs from nude studies to portraits, dance drawings, floral decorations, and Mediterranean scenes. The pieces on offer come from the collection of the artist’s son and gallery owner Pierre Matisse and his wife Tanya. According to pre-auction estimates, the most significant items could sell for between €50,000 and €70,000, but there are also more affordable pieces in the lower thousands. You can participate online from April 9th to 17th.
