St. Nicolas Church
The Church of St. Nicholas is one of the most distinct landmarks in the city and one of the most precious examples of Baroque architecture north of the Alps.
Architect Christoph Dientzenhofer began work on the church in 1704 and his son Killian Ignaz Dientzenhofer and son-in-law Anselmo Lurago completed the construction in 1755. When looking at the church from the outside, you will be amazed by the verdigris dome which is 20 meters in diameter and adjoins a bell tower, which visitors can climb. The interior height of the church, 49 meters, makes it the loftiest in Prague. Take note of the ceiling fresco by Johann Kracker – it's one of the largest in Europe. You will also admire many delightful marble sculptures inside the church and the massive pipe organ, which W. A. Mozart played during his visits to Prague.
