Klementinum

In the center of Prague's charming Old Town sits the large complex of the Klementinum.

Home to the Czech Republic's National Library, the Klementinum sits on over 2 hectares and dates back to the 11th century. It was then that a chapel was erected and dedicated to Saint Clement. During the middle ages the complex was a Dominican monastery, and afterwards it was home to a Jesuit college – at one point it was even the largest Jesuit college in the world. The Klementinum was established as a university, library and observatory under Empress Maria Theresa in 1773, but it wasn't until 1781 that the National Library was founded onsite. This impressive Baroque complex is the second largest historic complex in Prague, after only the massive Prague Castle complex. Inside this wondrous place you will find beautiful architectural facades, quiet courtyards with intriguing sundials (a must when battling with the swarms of tourists during high season), and the 68 meter high Astronomical Tower (gorgeous views can be seen here of the tile rooftops and many spires of Prague). The real highlights here though are the frescoed Baroque Library Hall and the downright magical Mirror Chapel.
