Špilberk Castle
Dating back to the 13th century, Brno's Špilberk Castle sits perched atop a hill, overlooking the city below.
This old fortress was completed by King Přemysl Otakar II. of Bohemia as the seat of the Moravian military governors in the middle of the 14th century. Dominating the skyline of the city of Brno for centuries, this old fortress has a deep dark past as it served as a brutal prison during the Austro-Hungarian reign; it was during this time that Špilberk Castle earned its horrible nickname, the Dungeon of the Nations. The merciless prison was made famous by Italian poet Silvio Pellico who served time for eight years in its harsh rooms and wrote Le miei prigioni - My Prisons. Today the castle houses the Brno City Museum and is one of most important cultural centers in the Czech Republic. The museum offers permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as various cultural events such as concerts, theater performances, sports competitions and more.
