Schwarzenberg Palace

If you are interested in Baroque art, you should not miss a visit to the incredible Schwarzenberg Palace, located on Hradčanské Náměstí in Prague.

This beautiful Renaissance building houses a permanent exhibition of the National Gallery Prague called Baroque in Bohemia. Across the three floors, you can see 160 sculptures and 280 other artifacts of late Renaissance and Baroque painting, created between the end of the 16th century and late 18th century in the territory of the Czech lands. The exhibits include works by significant Baroque sculptors, such as Matyáš Bernard Braun, Ferdinand Maximilián Brokoff, Jan Jiří Bendl and others, works by the foremost Baroque Czech architecture painters Norbert Grund and Josef Platzer, paintings by Petr Brandl, works by the late-Baroque painters Václav Vavřinec Reiner, Ignác Raab and Antonín Kern, as well as works by artists from the court of Emperor Rudolph II, and much more. In the attic of the palace there is an exhibition of the 550 most valuable historic weapons from the collections of the Military History Institute in Prague. Besides weapons from the period between the 15th and mid-19th centuries you can also see portraits of famous military leaders and large paintings depicting battle scenes. The building of the palace itself was built between 1545 and 1567, and is characterized by its sgraffito ornamentation and multi-level, richly decorated Renaissance gables. Schwarzenberg Palace has been in the ownership of the National Gallery since 2002 and after the completion of its overall reconstruction in 2008 the current permanent exhibition was placed there. As of the beginning of 2019, this exhibition will be closed due to a scheduled preparation of a new exhibition dedicated to local and international old masters. Schwarzenberg Palace is open every day except Mondays from 10 a.m. till 6 p.m.
