Trade Fair Palace
The Trade Fair Palace, located in Prague's Holešovice district, was one of the first and largest Functionalist buildings in Prague. This iconic cultural monument is now home to the National Gallery's permanent exhibition of works of art from the 20th and 21st centuries.
The main focus of the collections of the National Gallery in the Trade Fair Palace is Czech and foreign fine art. Here you will find fine displays of artworks by world-famous significant artists like František Kupka, Alfons Mucha, Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh. With Czech art especially, the displays emphasize the unique qualities that set it apart, and make it uniquely Czech. Besides fine art, the 13,500 m2 space, spread across three floors, also features architectural exhibits, furniture, fashion, photographs, drawings, graphic art, design, and stage design. Altogether you can see more than 2,000 exhibits in the gallery. Exhibitions of the world's best contemporary artists often take place on the lowest floor of the Trade Fair Palace. The Trade Fair Palace building, created by the architects Josef Fuchs and Oldřich Tyl, is very interesting from architectural and historical points of view as well – before it became a part of the National Gallery in 1995 the building had been used since WWII as headquarters of companies dealing with foreign trade. As part of the building's dark history, it served as a gathering point for Prague's Jewish citizens in WWII before they were transported to the Terezín concentration camp.
