The National Museum

The National Museum, whose permanent exhibitions can be found not only in Prague, but also in other places outside of the capital city, is the biggest museum of the Czech Republic. It is at the same time the oldest museum – it was founded as “Patriotic Museum”in 1818. Its aim is to contribute to the development of national identity and awareness of affiliation to a bigger European and world community and culture. Collections of the National Museum comprise many branches of science from biology to social sciences. In its expositions you will see exhibits from the areas of natural history, prehistory, geology, anthropology, botany, zoology, classical archeology, numismatics, theater history, musicology and many others. The exhibitions in Prague can be found in the main historical building and new building of the National Museum at the top of Wenceslas Square, in the Czech Museum of Music, Lapidary in the Holešovice exhibition grounds area, Antonín Dvořák Museum, Bedřich Smetana Museum, Náprstek Museum and other buildings stated below.
